Asim Ali 0 Posted January 23, 2004 This Interview is taken from one of the chat sites which is use to call cricketers for the live chat. ==================================================== Marvan Atapattu Sri Lankan Batsman Question > You have a good record against Pakistan. Do you enjoy playing against them? Marvan Atapattu > I also have a good record against some other teams. But yes, I enjoy playing against Pakistan . Question> You are one of the quality opening batsmen in the world. What are the qualities that go into the making of a successful opening batsman? Marvan Atapattu > You should know where your off-stump is. Experience and determination also matter a lot . Question > Which batsman have you modelled your game on? Marvan Atapattu > Nobody. But I admire a few players. I admire Sachin Tendulkar . Question > You open with Jayasuriya so often, do you ever feel overshadowed, as he is such an explosive batsman? Marvan Atapattu > Not really. Whenever I bat, I just play my game and Sanath plays his . Question > Who are the bowlers who trouble you often? Marvan Atapattu > Wasim Akram has troubled me consistently . Question > Which one do you prefer playing spin or fast bowling? Marvan Atapattu > Fast bowling, because it is easy to play fast bowlers. There is too much pressure while facing spinners with close fielders. Of course all this is purely mental. But it helps if you have a scored a few runs off the faster bowlers and then face the spinners as you are set by that time . Question > What has been your greatest cricketing moment? Marvan Atapattu > Scoring a hundred in the Emirates Trophy final at Lords against England in 1998 . Question > Who do you think is the best batsman in the world? Marvan Atapattu > Definitely Sachin Tendulkar. Just have a look at his records . Question > You are one of the few Test opening batsmen who have made a success of batting at no 3 in the one dayers? How difficult is it to adapt especially when you know that you are not a stroke player? Marvan Atapattu > I don't agree that I'm not a stroke player, adjusting to one dayers, I haven't really changed my game as my role is of an anchorman. I haven't changed my batting style much, unless I'm batting in the slog-overs . Question > What is your birthdate? Marvan Atapattu > November 22, 1970 . Question > How do you cope when the pitch is difficult and the bowler is on top? Marvan Atapattu > There are bound to be times when the bowler is bowling very well and is on top of you, and a batsman should always expect it. Once he is mentally prepared for it then I don't think it is difficult . Question > Which is your favourite country to tour in? Marvan Atapattu > I enjoy playing in South Africa as I like the pitches there and I also like the country. Question > Do Sri Lankan players face similar criticism when they perform poorly as compared to Indian or Pakistani cricketers? Marvan Atapattu > Life for the Sri Lankan cricketers isn't as tough as the Indians or Pakistanis because our public is a little more tolerant . Question > Do you think that Test cricket is picking up faster? Marvan Atapattu > Definitely and that's because of the way Aussies are playing the game. Just like we started the theory of scoring quickly in the first fifteen overs, Australia's policy of scoring at least four runs in an over has really revolutionised Test cricket . Carol > Besides cricket what other interests do you have? Marvan Atapattu > I love maintaining my car, I own a Volkswagen . Question > Who is your ideal? Marvan Atapattu > As a cricketer, I admired Botham a lot because of his superhuman feats particularly during the 1981 Ashes series . Question > What are the goals that you have set yourself? Marvan Atapattu > To average 40 plus in both forms of cricket . Question > Which is the best Test innings you have played? Marvan Atapattu > The double hundred against Pakistan in Kandy in 2000 was my best Test innings . Question > Who is the best captain that you have played under? Marvan Atapattu > Undoubtedly Arjuna, he has done so much for Sri Lankan cricket . Question > Don't you feel that Sachin has some problems with off cutters, especially from a fast medium pacer like Abdul Razzak? Marvan Atapattu > Just because Razzak has dismissed him a couple of times it doesn't mean he has a technical problem. If Sachin has a problem then every-one does . Question > How did you keep yourself motivated after having made a disastrous debut as you scored just one run in six innings? Marvan Atapattu > Fortunately I wasn't a Pakistani or Indian cricketer otherwise I would have never comeback. I had a goal to play for Sri Lanka and it kept me going . Question > How difficult is it to live out of a suitcase day in and day out all through the year and what toll does it take on a cricketer? Marvan Atapattu > It is tough yes, but then one has to make sacrifices when one is playing for the country. There are so many other benefits too that come along with being an international cricketer. As it is we play for a short period may be ten years or so during that time one has to make these sacrifices. It is tough but one has to deal with it. It's part of the game. And one has to give it 100 percent. Family support is also important when you are away on long tours . Question > Do you think you have peaked as a cricketer? Marvan Atapattu > I don't think so. I am never happy or satisfied with my performance. The day I'll be satisfied I'll stop playing the game. I'm still learning . Question > How do you manage to play reverse swing so well? What is the secret of facing it? Marvan Atapattu > If you watch the bowler's hand, you know how it will swing; you must play it late if you don't spot it from the bowler's hand . Question > Did you always want to be an opener? Marvan Atapattu > Not at all. I happened to be an opener because I had a bad start and the administrators thought that I was nervous in the dressing room and they thought it was best to send me in early. I started off with bowling leg-spinners. I wish I had continued bowling leggies because it would have been a good option for the team . Question > What are your views on match fixing? Marvan Atapattu > It should never have happened. It shocked me to see names like Cronje and Azhar involved. But now all that is past and we can just concentrate on cricket . Question > Do you support "sledging" tactics by the opposition and is it good for the game? Marvan Atapattu > It is not good for cricket. There has to be aggression from fast bowlers, but within a certain limit, talking and abusing doesn't help. Good cricketers don't talk. Look at Sachin. He lets his bat do the talking . Question > Does Sri Lanka still miss D'Silva? Marvan Atapattu > Yes but then Sri Lanka will go on playing without Aravinda, Murali, Jayasuriya or Atapattu >. There are going to be players who will be better than all these. Yes it is a big loss but then the game is bigger than the players and cricket goes on it has to . Question > Who is your source of inspiration? Marvan Atapattu > My wife, she inspires me in every way . Question > How popular is cricket among Sri Lankan women? Marvan Atapattu > The game is not as popular with Sri Lankan women as it is with any other women . Question > If you were given three wishes, what would you ask for? Marvan Atapattu > 1] Peace 2] No discrimination . Question > Have you contemplated life beyond cricket? If yes, what would be the options? Commentary or coaching or do you want to get away from the game completely? Marvan Atapattu > I won't say I'll get away from cricket completely, the little I know I'll get it across to young players. But I do have a job at a private bank in Colombo; I'll concentrate on that . Sign off message > Thanks for being with me on the net, it was a wonderful experience it was the first time and I hope there are many such experiences. Thanks and goodbye !
