Portuguese Hail Ricardo The Lionheart, Conqueror O

yeah Specially After Departure of Ronny English team looks Like Kids But Still a Good match and Better Teams Wins It -
They restored the monarchy in Portugal on Friday, crowning Ricardo the Lionheart, conqueror of England and winner of the greatest match of Euro 2004. Sporting Lisbon's goalkeeper was the hero who saved a vital penalty in the shootout then slammed the decisive spot kick into the net to propel the host nation into the semi-finals and shatter England's dreams at the Stadium of Light. "Yes!" screamed the front-page headline in Diario de Noticias. "Ricardo the Lionheart caught the English off guard. He took off his gloves, saved the last penalty and scored the winning goal." The sports paper A Bola caught the nation's mood, saying "Portugal v England will go down in the history of the championship whatever the outcome... This match should have been the Euro final." Portugal's difficult passage through the group stages now forgotten, the sporting daily Record looked forward to Luis Figo and his teammates winning the final. "The sky's the limit. The party can go on and so can the dream," it said. "A battle of titans that nearly ended in tragedy" was how the mass-circulation 24 Horas described the match which had gone into a penalty shoot-out after the two sides were tied at 2-2 at the end of extra time. "The Portuguese suffered until the last minute," agreed the Correio de Manha, "but it was worth it for the spectacular victory." For the daily Publico, the match was more like High Noon, "a cinema epic which ended like all westerns do, with the good guys winning."

LONDON, (AFP) - More than 24 hours after England crashed out of Euro 2004 in a dramatic penalty shoot out against Portugal, the British newspapers were still struggling to find a fitting fall guy for a nation's loss. "Blame it on Becks," the Daily Mirror whined, fingering England captain David Beckham who missed the crucial first penalty in the dramatic showdown which ended 6-5 in Portugal's favour. This was not the official line of the newspaper but the view of the girlfriend of Swiss referee Urs Meier who copped the initial flak in Britain's press Friday for disallowing a Sol Campbell header a minute before full-time. "Don't blame him (Meier), blame Becks," 37-year-old Nicole Petignat, herself a football referee, was quoted as saying by the tabloid. "It was a clear foul," she said of Chelsea and England defender John Terry's involvement in a last-minute goal mouth scramble which ultimately changed nothing and left the sides deadlocked at 1-1 and heading for extra time. "I don't know why people are complaining," she said, rubbing salt into English fans' wounds by claiming that Portugal deserved to win and that England "were looking for an excuse." The Sun was adamant, though. They were not looking for a villain, they had found their guy. According to Britain's top-selling daily tabloid, Meier, a shopkeeper from Zurich, apologised personally to coach Sven-Goran Eriksson for what the newspaper said was a "crazy decision" which "robbed England of Euro 2004 glory". But in public, Meier has conceded nothing. "England are just looking for someone to blame and they want it to be me," he said on Friday. A quick flick through the back pages of the Saturday newspapers is enough to see that if that is true there is certainly a lot of disagreement as the nation that invented football ponders yet another failure at a major tournament. Several focus on Eriksson, the unflamboyant Swedish coach, who has remained defiant in defeat and insisted he would change nothing if he went about the competition again. The consensus, however, was that England were indeed "robbed" and that only an unlikely win from Tim Henman, the only Briton left in the Wimbledon tennis championships, will suffice to restore a nation's wounded pride.

Greece created one of the biggest shocks in the history of the European Championships by dumping defending champions France out of the tournament here on Friday. A 65th-minute header by Werder Bremen striker Angelos Charisteas was enough to give Otto Rehhagel's tightly-organised side a 1-0 win that sends them into a meeting with either the Czech Republic or Denmark in their first ever appearance in the semi-finals of a major tournament. The demise of Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry and co. will be regretted by most neutrals. But Jacques Santini's side had only themselves to blame after another listless display resulted in them joining England, Spain, Italy and Germany on the Euro 2004 scrapheap. France coach Jacques Santini said he was sad that he hadn't bowed out by defending the title successfully. "It is a big disappointment because the adventure has come to an end when we could have hoped to go all the way," said the 52-year-old, who is due to coach Spurs this season. "In the first half, the Greeks deserved to score but after half-time the reverse was true. "However once we went behind we seemed to want to play as fast as possible," added Santini, who had never suffered a defeat in a competitive match since he replaced Roger Lemerre after the 2002 World Cup debacle. His opposite number Otto Rehhagel said it was a just reward for his players. "How well you play depends on your opponents and we didn't let them play well today. "For their suffering, their application and their will to win, these young men deserved this victory." The normally understated 65-year-old German allowed himself one piece of hyperbole when asked how significant the result was. "This news will go round the world." Charisteas basked in the glory and said it was a well deserved victory. "I believe this is the greatest moment in Greek football. All Greeks must be proud today, wherever they are, they should smile and rejoice at this victory," said Charisteas, who was scoring his second goal of the tournament. France winger Robert Pires perhaps best summed up what defeat meant for a large part of the oldest squad in the tournament especially the defence. "It's the end of an era. Now we have to think of other things, mainly the 2006 World Cup which is coming up," said the 31-year-old Arsenal star. Over the 90 minutes, Greece were worthy winners against a French side that never got anywhere close to the level of performance many expected them to produce in their first encounter in the knockout stage of the competition. Greece had enjoyed the better of an uninspiring first half. Demis Nikolaidis was the first to test Fabien Barthez, with a 25-yard drive, and the Greeks were unlucky not to take a 15th-minute lead when Konstantinos Katsouranis flicked a Georgios Karagounis free-kick on to the inside of the post. Barthez threw himself to his left to smother the ball as it spun back towards him and referee Anders Frisk waved away the Greek appeals that the ball had already crossed the line. France's only chance of the opening period came ten minutes later. Zidane sent Bixente Lizarazu to the byline and the left-back's cross was perfectly judged for Henry but the Arsenal striker directed his header wide. Another Katsouranis effort did not overly trouble Barthez but the French goalkeeper was almost caught out when the impressive Panagiotis Fyssas cut inside William Gallas on the left flank. The midfielder unleashed a dipping left-foot shot that forced Barthez into a frantic scramble to get back to his line and tip the ball over. The start of the second half brought a change of gear from France. Henry tried his luck with an acrobatic volley on the turn that was deflected wide. Then Lizarazu provided a flashback to his younger days by gliding past two defenders and deep into the box before his progress was halted by a last-ditch tackle. It was still not until the 64th minute of the match however that Greece's goalkeeper, Antonios Nikopolidis, had a serious save to make, which he did with a dive to his left to collect Henry's effort from just outside the area. But just as it seemed France were on the verge of assuming control of the match, Greece produced their winner. Theodoros Zagorakis was afforded acres of space on the right of the French box and the Greece captain exploited it. A deft first touch carried him to the edge of the area and the former Leicester City star's chip was equally precise, allowing Charisteas to power an unstoppable header high past Barthez's left hand from eight yards out. The Greeks dogged commitment to getting all ten outfield players behind the ball ensured Santini's second-half substitutions did little to influence a match that was slowly slipping away from the defending champions. France's last chance to cling on to their title fell to Henry with just over three minutes left but, once again, his header was directed wide of the target.
