Hunza: Spillway to reduce flooding risk by 50%: Army Officials

RAWALPINDI: Engineer In Chief of Pakistan Army Lt. Gen. Shahid Niaz has said that the artificial lake created near Attabad due to land sliding poses no threat to Tarbela Dam.In a news briefing here on Thursday, Lt. Gen. Shahid Niaz said a 24 metre deep spillway has been made for the discharge of water from the lake which is going to reduce the risk (of flooding) by 50 percent.He said the outflow of water from the lake will begin by the end of current month through the spillway. The water level is rising by 3 feet every day in the lake created by land sliding on January 4 this year, he said.The Engineer In Chief said all possible measures are being taken to rescue and save the local people.He said Tarbela Dam will not face any threat even in the case of the overflowing of the lake and that the water outflow will complete in 5 to 6 hours.
