Tea Party Domain Name Could Fetch $1 Million

If the Tea Party wants its own dot-com domain name, it might have to pony up $1 million or more. That’s because the domain name TeaParty.com now belongs to The Tea Party, a Canadian band that’s owned the name since 1993.

Nobody’s offered to plunk down $1 million just yet for TeaParty.com, but Warren Adelman, president of GoDaddy.com thinks that’s an accurate estimate of its value. He told Businessweek he wouldn’t be surprised if the name sold for that amount, given the spending habits of high-flying political campaigns and groups. He says, “If you look at the money being talked about this time around — campaigns raising $1 billion — it’s easy to expect teaparty.com to go for well over $1 million.â€

If the band times it just right, it could unload the domain name, pick up a slightly altered name such as teapartykicksass.com (which is available), and walk away with a good chunk of cash. That sort of rich deal is not unheard of — in fact, it’s a fairly low amount compared with some domain name deals, such as sex.com, which sold for a reported $13 million last year.

Although the band hasn’t ruled out selling the domain name to a conservative political group, the band members are reportedly more oriented toward liberal politics, wishing some deep-pocketed individual or organization would come up with big bucks to take the name off its hands.
