what it would take to get Linux to displace Windows

I dont know about u guys but here's what it would take for me:

  • Video card compatible with ATI including 3D rendering without needing to download and install or compile the kernel (which I don't know how to do).
  • include DVD playback & recording software wothout the hassle of downloading, extracting, compiling and installing it (which I don't know how to do).
  • Better media support for things like Yahoo's movie preview trailers, I still can't view trailers from Yahoo.
  • Overall better hardware compatibility for various scanners, DVD-CDRW burners.
  • Last, support for major graphics/web authoring tools such as Corel, Adobe, MS Publisher and Dreamweaver.

I play a little with Linux and it's interesting, but I don't want to be a command line programmer in order to view multi-media, play DVD's, or burn CD's. I can't take the time to learn the free applications bundled in Linux. Linux needs to become more plug-n-play and support 3rd party apps (meaning mostly Microsoft here) by default on initial installation like Adobe & Corel. Well I'm sure most of you that are hard core command line folks will have plenty to say regarding me suggestions for "plug-n-play", but really, most people either don't have the time or the funds to learn or get training for Linux. If Linux wants to give MS serious competition, they need to do it by giving the end users the same type of plug-n-play ease of using the OS as you get with Windows (this is of course before you get hacked and loaded with viruses & trojans).
