fati 0 Posted December 25, 2003 THe President congratulated both the government and MMA teams for concluding the discussions on the LFO amicably and expected that "all political parties in future will conduct the proceedings of the Parliament democratically and harmoniously." He said decisions have been taken in the interests of Pakistan and democracy and in accordance with the agreement he will seek a vote of confidence from the Parliament and leave the office of the Army Chief by Dec 2004. Today a very long contentious issue of LFO between government and the opposing parties was resolved peacefully. The agreement on Legal Framework Order between the government is a success of democracy in Pakistan. In this context, we have decided that in lieu of making LFO a part of Pakistan’s constitution, the LFO shall be implemented under an ‘Act of Parliament’; hence, National Security shall set up under the parliamentary act. He said he would shed his military uniform in December next year. The issue of the appointment of chief justices was also resolved. The president will the sole authority to appoint them but in consultation with de facto prime minister. But, powers of appoint chief justices shall lay with president of Pakistan. Talking about local government, he describe it a silent revolution in Pakistan as viewed all the people at international level. About the issue of retirement age of the Supreme Court judges, he said the decision to increase their retirement age has been withdrawn. The judges will now retire on the original date of retirement, as it was before the introduction of the Legal Framework Order. Now it will be upto the Parliament whether it considers the issue of their age of retirement. However, he said, the retirement age of judges was increased by three years in line with the advice of the Law Commission and as per international practice. "I consulted with the senior advocates and judges and took a decision in the interest of Pakistan and harmony," he said.
