Asim Ali 0 Posted May 27, 2004 Priyanka Gandhi, daughter of India's Congress party president Sonia Gandhi, has expressed the hope that Pakistan's cricket team will tour India soon, allowing people an opportunity to give them a rousing reception. Priyanka, along with her brother Rahul and husband Robert Vadra, had visited Pakistan to watch the first match of the India-Pakistan one-day series in March. They were given a warm welcome by Pakistanis. India beat Pakistan in both the Test and one-day series - the first triumphs on Pakistani soil in both versions of the game. In a letter to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Priyanka said: "Our visit to your country has been rich in heart-warming experiences, and memories that we will always treasure." Abbas Zaidi, a former diplomat who was adviser to PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan for the India-Pakistan series, made available a copy of the letter to The News daily. "Throughout our stay, we were overwhelmed by the generous hospitality, warm welcome and friendship extended to us, and the affection and support given to our cricket team by the people of Pakistan, who displayed such a wonderful spirit of sportsmanship," the newspaper quoted Priyanka as saying in the letter. "Both teams were great ambassadors of goodwill, and we hope cricket diplomacy will continue to strengthen the bonds of friendship established between our two countries during these matches," she said. "I hope you will soon give us the opportunity to welcome you and the Pakistan cricket team to our country, so that the people of India can also express the heartfelt warmth and friendship they feel for their brothers and sisters in Pakistan," Priyanka wrote.
