Waqas 48 Posted January 30, 2005 The First international marathon of Pakistan kicked off here this morning in Lahore with great fanfare and zeal among as many as fifteen thousand local and foreign participants, towering among them is the oldest runner from England, Fuja Singh, 93 besides other conspicuous foreigners 10 from India, 6 from Russia, 2 from Ukraine, 1 from Spain and 1 each from Bela Russia and South Africa. Punjab Chief Minister, Chaudhry Pervez Ellahi inaugurated the marathon. The winners of the marathon would be given awards worth one hundred thousand dollars. Men, women of all ages and children, 11 and above are participating in this marathon. The 6-kilometre race has been named ‘Fun and Family Race’ in which many renowned personalities are participating. The foreign runners arriving Lahore told that they are quite happy on coming here, as they find the weather very pleasant for race. Director marathon race, N. Lead Brook told that the primary objective of this marathon was to promote the fondness for exercise among the people. Punjab chief minister’s task force had earlier set up training camps in different educational institutions of Lahore, where the foreign experts had given the briefings on marathon and tips on making the marathon a success. Among the women representing Pakistan in the marathon, seasoned athletes of the country Shazia Hidayat and Sadia Pervin remained the centre of attraction. Shazia Hidayat had won several laurels for Pakistan during 1992-2004. She has the distinction of representing Pakistan in the Sydney Olympics, while Sadia Pervin has the honour of representing Pakistan in a similar marathon in Hong Kong.
