Shabo 0 Posted January 26, 2004 Hey Waqas :o This is the same flu that has killed many ppl in Vietnam. The victims complained of "high fever and a rough cough" as being the initial symptoms then soon after they passed away :( Bangkok & Thailand r fearing the virus has attacked there too but tests are being done to confirm these suspicions! I think there is a breakout in the Asian subcontinent... I hope it clears quickly. Sx

senoriTa 0 Posted January 28, 2004 Facts about bird flu Here is a look at the bird flu spreading through Asia. WHAT IS IT: A form of influenza believed to strike all birds, though domestic poultry are believed especially prone to it. It also has jumped to humans, though no human-to-human transmission has been reported. WHERE IS IT: Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Laos. Pakistan says it had detected bird flu, though the World Health Organization has not yet confirmed an outbreak. Thailand and Vietnam have reported human cases. HOW MANY PEOPLE AFFECTED: Possibly 13 people - eight confirmed cases and five suspected cases - have died. Vietnam has confirmed seven human cases, six of whom have died. Thailand has confirmed three cases, including two deaths. Thailand says five other suspected patients have also died. HOW IT'S PASSED: Infected birds spread the virus through saliva, faeces, and nasal secretions. So far, only humans with direct contact with sick birds have caught the disease. But scientists are worried that bird flu could link with regular human influenza, mutate, and become a deadly new virus and trigger a pandemic SYMPTOMS IN BIRDS: Loss of appetite, ruffled feathers, fever, weakness, diarrhoea, excessive thirst, swelling. If the strain is virulent, mortality rate can range between 50 percent to 100 percent. SYMPTOMS IN HUMANS: Fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, eye infections, pneumonia, acute respiratory distress, viral pneumonia. OTHER HUMAN OUTBREAKS: Bird flu was first reported in humans in Hong Kong in 1997. Since then, it's popped up mostly in Asia, although the Netherlands reported an outbreak, including human cases, in 2003. TREATMENT FOR HUMANS: World Health Organization says this year's strain is resistant to cheaper anti-viral drugs, amantadine and rimantadine. Scientists are exploring more expensive treatment. WHO also recommends quarantining sick people. FOOD SAFETY: There's no evidence that the virus is being passed through eating chicken products, health experts say. Heat kills viruses, and WHO says chicken products should be cooked thoroughly at temperatures of at least 70 degrees Celsius. WHO also says people should wash their hands after handling poultry and ensure that poultry carcasses do not contaminate other objects. i

fati 0 Posted January 31, 2004 Pakistani agricultural researchers say a disease which has killed up to four million chickens in the country's south since November is a strain of bird flu. A Government handout issued to poultry breeders in southern Sindh province identified the disease as avian influenza H-7 and H-9. "The outbreak of the avian flu in Karachi has been established through various laboratory tests," veterinary doctor Jawad Zaheer, a researcher at Quality Breeders in Islamabad, said. "A polymerised chain reaction (PCR) test has also confirmed the prevalence." The Government handout has recommended culling chickens around Karachi. "There is no solution to get rid of the said disease problem other than its eradication through destroying all birds," it said. "If flocks could not be destroyed, necessary measures are to minimise the losses through continuous vaccination." The Pakistan Poultry Association has contested the Government claim. "H-7 and H-9 are not as fatal as H-5NI," poultry researcher Ahmed Qureshi from KNN Poultry Diagnostic and Research Institute in Karachi said. Strains of bird flu have also been detected in Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, South Korea, and Taiwan. The Pakistani strain is not as dangerous as the H-5N1 strain which has afflicted Thailand and Vietnam, causing seven deaths and the killing and culling of 13.9 million chickens between them. "There was widespread death at the poultry farms around Karachi (Sindh capital), but our researchers are still not able to confirm whether it was due to avian flu or some other unknown virus," the association's convener Abdul Maroof Siddiqui said. "We have very strong doubts over the Government's ability to diagnose the disease as avian flu, as they do not have human or technical expertise." but i m still eating chicken.. aha. lets see what may happen
fati 0 Posted February 9, 2004 Bird flu no more exists in country: PPA says Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA), Sindh, Saturday said that local poultry farms were no more in the grip of bird flu. The PPA made the announcement at a press conference at Karachi Press Club. The news conference was organised by patron in chief of PPA Khalil Sattar, Mehmood Hasan, Dr. Zafar ul Islam and Maroof Siddiqui. The office bearers of PPA claimed that during the last two weeks there had been no deaths among layer birds due to H7 and H9. The scientists and doctors of the Islamabad and Lahore-based veterinary institutes detected the virus in the second week of November last. They said that the H7 and H9 virus were not dangerous to human health as compared to fatal H5 virus which was detected in Thailand and some other countries. The H7 and 9 viruses were first discovered in the `layer flock' in 1994 and again in 1996 in Mansehra district (NWFP) and the doctors then developed vaccines. It was impossible for the affected egg laying hens to survive from this virus adding that vaccines were only used to prevent the disease. A member of National Disease Control Committee, Sindh Zone, Dr. Zafarul Islam Siddiqui said that the `broiler birds' used for meat purpose were completely safe and unaffected from the virus. Dr. Zafar said that presently any mortalities in the poultry farms were a matter of routine and have nothing to do with the virus. The poultry farms across the country were being supervised and looked after by more than 500 qualified veterinary doctors. The poultry industry has a revolving investment of about Rs 50 to 60 billion per annum. According to the PPA members, the poultry farmers in Karachi suffered a loss of an estimated Rs 700 to 800 million since November due to the virus which engulfed 50 percent of the `layer birds' population of 8 to 10 million. The Association members further stated that there was no major export of poultry except a few consignments of `broilers' in the Middle East and Afghanistan. They claimed that due to the media reports, the demand for chickens have dropped significantly and added that it would take some time to restore the confidence of general public in this regard.
