Qaasim 0 Posted August 8, 2004 (edited) Daata Durbar BY Ustad Miran Buksh Moortanwaley (1877-1944) Ali Bin-Usman al-Hujveri called Data Ganj Bakhsh, 'bestower of favours' by the devout, is the patron saint of Lahore. He arrived in this city in 1039 AD from this native Ghazni. For 33 years he resided here spreading the eternal message of love and toleration. He died in 1072 AD and was buried close to the mosque he had built just outside the Bhati Gate. For centuries Data Durbar or the 'court of the bestower', as his shrine is popularly known, has drawn men and women of all religious beliefs. Qaasim 0 Posted August 8, 2004 Chou Burji BY Ustad Miran Buksh Moortanwaley (1877-1944) All that remains of a once sprawling garden is this splendid gateway with four towers. Attributed to Zebunnissa Begum, the accomplished daughter of the Mugal Emperor Aurangzeb, this garden was laid in 1646 AD. A fragmentary inscription above the archway states that the garden was bestowed upon Mian Bai. Despite the indifference of man and time, the gateway stands with its profuse, enamelled tile-work to testify to its original grandeur on the road leading southwards to Multan. Qaasim 0 Posted August 8, 2004 Badshahi Mosque The huge mosque with three marbles domes, which dominates lahore's sky-line to this day, was built by Emperor Aurangzeb, son of the other great patron of architecture, Shah Jahan. Built in 1673 AD/1084 AH, under the supervision of Fadai Khan Koka, his foster brother, the mosque has withstood the ravages of time. Sikh misuse and British abuse did not mar the majesty and grandeur of this building . The most outstanding features of the mosque are its minarets, whose proportions embody grace, strength and which stand witness, like the index finger, to the glory of God. Qaasim 0 Posted August 8, 2004 Sheran-wala Gate by Iqbal Ahmad Sheran-wala Gate, as the name suggests, was associated with lions. During the Sikh period, it is stated Ranjit Singh the Maharaja, kept two domesticated lions here. Qaasim 0 Posted August 9, 2004 Gateway To Jehangir's Tomb Nazir Ahmad Like his father Akbar the Great, Emperor Jahangir had a special place for Lahore in his heart. So when the fourth Great Mughal died on 28 October 1627, at the age of 58, on his express wish he was buried on the northern bank of the Ravi at Shahdara. The tomb was completed after ten years in 1638. It is situated in a splendid, enclosed garden spread over 72 acres, known as Bagh-i-Dilkusha. Qaasim 0 Posted August 9, 2004 Kamran's Baradari / 'Pavilion' Perhaps the earliest surviving Mughal monument in Lahore, Mirza Kamran's Baradari, Pavilion, was built in 1535. It stood in an extensive garden laid out by the younger brother of the second Mughal emperor, Humayun (1530-1540 and 1555 - 1556). Kamran took possession of Lahore and became ruler of Punjab, Kabul and Qandhar. His rule in Lahore was marked by construction of beautiful gardens and palaces. When the river Ravi changed its course between 1719 and 1748, it swept away most of the gardens and left the pavilion, as it stands today, above the Ravi waters, in splendid isolation. (Note As u can c the baradari is still attached to the land on the otherside of ravi but ravi again changed (may be in 1967) its course and brought the baradari in between its course this is how it is at present) Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
